SKIN CARE – 5 HABITS THAT IS HURTING YOUR SKIN

As kids we were blessed with that baby soft, smooth, clean and clear skin but as we grew up we saw many changes happening to our skin.

Both external and internal factors plays a vital role when it comes to healthy looking skin. First let me get this straight

CHOOSE HEALTHY SKIN OVER PERFECT SKIN

Your skin is going to get acne, scars, blemishes, patches and that’s okay !

Don’t stress yourself when you see that pimple. With the right care and products or maybe a skin care professional, that can be CURED !

But you can’t get healthy skin just by being positive. It requires work, A lot of work actually! Your blessed if you got a good skin but strugglers like me who struggle to bring out the best version of their skin should know that your daily habits has a huge impact on your skin.

Let’s begin with these common habits that are actually hurting your skin

NOTE : We all have different skin type so what may hurt oily skin may not hurt dry skin.

1. UNHEALTHY GREASY DIET !

In my case THIS WAS THE MAJOR ISSUE.

All that burgers, fries, onion rings, pizza, cheesy dips & I am drooling! That can really harm your skin.

How an unhealthy diet can directly impact your skin

Some research suggests that insulin may play a role in acne. You might wanna keep your diet clean. Not just for better skin but also for overall health. Not only greasy unhealthy diet affects your skin but it also has a negative impact on your mental health.

Research says that “People who consume clean and healthy diet have a better mental and physical health compared to those who don’t”

  • Include more fruits and vegetable in your diet.
  • Avoid fried and oily food at all cost.
  • Don’t drink aerated drinks.
  • Add vitamin C to your diet.

2. AVOIDING SUNSCREEN

When I was in junior college one of my good friend introduced me to sunscreen. It was her dermatologist that prescribed her sun protection. Me on the other hand ignored the damage my skin went through because of sun.

I saw a great difference in my skin when I started using sunscreen. Not only I got rid of blemishes but also my skin was looking healthier. Sunscreen really protects your skin from the UV rays that can cause huge damage to your skin.

PRO TIP : Don’t apply sunscreen once and forget. Reapply the sunscreen

3. NOT CHANGING PILLOW CASE

Honestly this one is one of the major habit we all have.

Please change that pillow case often because it literally carries so much bacteria and toxins that is invisible to naked eye.

Using the same pillow case for months will harm your skin to a greater extent.

If you have acne problems use

  • Cotton pillow case as this absorb moisture, reducing sebum buildup, which will minimize acne breakouts
  • Silk Pillow case

4. DEHYDRATION

Water is not only important for skin but it is equally important for your brain and other parts of the body.

Lack of water consumption will cause dehydration. Not just that it will also cause dry skin because your skin needs optimum moisture that is provided by water.

Drinking water increases skin elasticity, keeping your skin healthy and glowing.

Many people often report that by increasing their water intake, their skin has a more radiant glow

5. STRESS

Yes, Psychological stress affects the Immune System

Stress and anxiety have a tremendous impact on our immune system,”

David Tolin, PhD, director of the Anxiety Disorders Center at Hartford Hospital’s Institute of Living

Does psychological stress affect the immune system? YES! It does. Psychological stress weakens our immunity in ways our mind can’t even imagine.

Psychological stress is triggered by plenty of things like work, relationships, family matters, finances, education, etc. In fact for some, even the tiniest thing causes them a lot of stress. Stress has a negative impact on our immunity. It disturbs the harmony connecting your mind and body, leading to a disturbance at the physical and mental planes.

Maybe that is why we hear people saying all the time ” Don’t stress yourself!”

I am sure you have heard these terms acute (severe and sudden in onset)and chronic(long-developing syndrome). When a person is stressed for a very long period of time, it is more likely that he is suffering from “chronic stress” or “long-term stress” This makes his body expose and susceptible to invite disease-causing agents.

Any kind of traumatic event does has an effect on the mind of a person. It depends on an individual how they deal with it. Some people can handle it very well but there is always some amount of stress caused by that event. On the other hand, it is very hard for some people to handle traumatic events especially if it is unexpected. Any kind of trauma leads to psychological stress in some way. So let’s say a person couldn’t handle the stress very well and that made him go into depression. Depression is always associated with overeating or not eating at all (yes! depression also impacts physical health along with mental health). Both of these conditions can cause diseases like obesity that lead to heart problems and anorexia nervosa that leads to nutrition deficiencies respectively.

Did you see how all of it affects the immune system? It weakens the natural immunity of our body and disables it slowly. When we’re stressed, the immune system’s ability to fight is reduced.

“Numerous studies confirm that mental stress has a direct effect on the immune system, and therefore probably a decisive influence on the development of disease”

Dr. Annette Sommershof

Stress-immune system is a very vast concept so let us stick to the basics. When we are in situations that cause stress, the power of the immune system is suppressed by stress hormones mainly cortisol. You see the immune system is suppressed which leads to escalating susceptibility to disease-causing agents.

Dr. Sommershof states that PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) patients have reduced immunity.

If you keep worrying and stressing yourself throughout your life your body will never get used to functioning normally because you are constantly giving missions to your immunity which are not required. This really harms your immunity.

TIPS TO REDUCE STRESS

Stress management plays an important role so let us learn how. Start by practicing little things given below:

  • Exercise produces endorphins—a chemical in the brain that reduces stress.
  • Practice meditation
  • Stay in touch with your hobbies because they act as a stress-buster
  • Reading articles about stress management and following them in your real life
  • Therapy
  • Social activities
  • Daily journal. Maintain a happy and positive journal wherein you write the best you have seen that day

So yes! that is it. I tried to make this article simple and easy to understand. I didn’t dive deep into medical language as I want you all to chief value and go that is useful and good for your mind.

5 BENEFITS OF GUAVA

Guava used to be my favourite fruit when I was in school (still is). When I used to ask for salty chips my mom used to buy me guava where they sprinkle chaat masala on top of it. Well I used to lick all the chat masala and then later devour the goodness of guava fruit. Sometimes I used to spit out the seeds because my teeth couldn’t handle the hard seeds. Might sound silly but it is a memory I look back and cherish. I didn’t knew the health benefits of guava back then but now I do so let’s begin.

Guava has so many health benefits. It is filled with nutrients necessary for your body. Guava is rich in vitamin C (228mg) and we all know Vitamin C is important for proper and normal functioning of human body and deficiency of Vitamin C causes health problems (eg scurvy)

Here I will give you top 5 health benefits by consuming Guava fruit –

1. FIGHTS AGAINST LOWERING BLOOD PRESSURE

High blood pressure is a condition in which the force of the blood against the arterial walls is too high. People having hypertension are advised to make some healthy changes in their diet. Adding guava in your diet helps in lowering your blood pressure.

This fruit is packed with loads of potassium and soluble fibre that help to lower your cholesterol levels. Also potassium and vitamin C is good for your health. Scientists have revealed that five guavas a day for three months lowers your blood pressure.

The antioxidants in guava leaf have the potential to lower high blood pressure.  It is possible that an increased consumption of guava fruit can cause a substantial reduction in BPs and blood lipids with a lack of decrease in HDL-cholesterol due to its higher potassium and soluble fibre content, respectively.

2. GOOD FOR SKIN

Guava is rich in vitamin C (228.3 mg ) and antioxidants which is great for your skin. I’ve mentioned earlier in my blog that antioxidant protects your skin against harmful UV rays. It reduces wrinkles on your skin giving you a healthy looking skin. Guava juice is also very hydrating for your skin.

Applying guava leaf on your skin reduces acne (because the antiseptic properties kills acne causing bacteria) and reduces dark spots.

3. REDUCES THE RISK OF HEART DISEASES

Now by now I know most of you know that I am obsessed with antioxidants. Antioxidants in guava fight oxidative damage cause by free radicals.

It improves your heart health health in many ways. Like I said earlier it reduces high blood pressure and studies also shows that this fruits lowers your cholesterol levels which is a good news to your heart. It promotes good cholesterol and lowers bad cholesterol.

Vitamin C also shows significant results in improving heart health and now we all know that guava is rich in vitamin C (also I am currently writing a blog on 20 fruits rich in vitamin C. Why Vitamin C is so important for your health).

4. TREATS CONSTIPATION

Constipation occurs when there is less bowel movements and the stools become hard and difficult to pass.

Guava is excellent source of dietary fibres. These fibres provide healthy bowel movements and prevents constipation.

5. IMMUNITY BOOSTER

A strong immune system is very important in providing a natural protection against illnesses.

Guava is rich in antioxidants, nutrients and vitamin C and all of this help in boosting your immunity. You should also try guava juice as it helps in boosting your immune system.

5 TIPS TO MANAGE SOCIAL ANXIETY AFTER LOCKDOWN

It is no surprise that this lockdown had a psychological effect on our mind.

We have been locked in our house for a while which means we were in our comfort zone for the past few months. I assume suddenly stepping out of the house will cause discomfort and social anxiety. We have been away from the outside world for months and it is normal to feel anxious when you step out to get back to your normal routine.

So in this blog I am going to give you 5 tips to manage social anxiety/life after lockdown

1. TAKE IT EASY!

It is absolutely normal to feel anxious when you step out of your comfort zone. So normalize that part and take it easy. Don’t rush or stress yourself or don’t pressurise yourself in anyway.

Keep in mind that you are not the only one out there who will feel anxious after the lockdown ends. It is not easy to get over a Pandemic. It takes time to get back to your normal life after three months and get used to your normal routine.

Follow these simple tips and it might help you to ease up your anxiety :

2. AVOID DIFFICULT CONVERSATION

This means that you have to be very careful about investing your energy. Don’t involve yourself in difficult conversations that requires your energy (trust me you are going to need energy to get through the day).

Avoid conversations that drains you emotionally like avoid political topics. Don’t engage into another pandemic/endemic conversation. Remember that just like you everyone is trying to cope up with some kind of social anxiety.

Instead do this :

  • Surround yourself with positive topics
  • Try to talk about simple yet creative things
  • Keep your conversations healthy
  • Try to smile more

3. RESERVE YOUR ENERGY

Remember it is your first normal/busy day after lockdown. Be careful about where you invest your energy. Every small work might drain you. So make sure that you keep reminding yourself that whatever you are doing “Is it worth your energy?”

Here’s how you can reserve your energy:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Stick to your schedule for the first one week
  • Invest your energy in important tasks
  • Eat healthy

4. PLAN A SCHEDULE

This might sound boring but trust me this is going to be of great help. Sticking to your schedule/to-do-list/daily planner will keep you motivated for a long time. This way you will be investing your energy into something that is benefiting you in return.

Having a schedule will definitely keep you focused, clear, flexible and occupied. Having a to-do-lis is better than awkwardly being blank about what to do next.

5. BE POSITIVE (HAVE FUN)

Have a positive mindset and do not forget to have fun after the lockdown comes to an end. Please be positive. Being positive when you are anxious is a great instrument to deal with social anxiety.

I suggest you read my blog on Positive Self-Talk and I am sure it will help you to keep a positive mindset.

Do things that make you happy. Laugh more and try to create a positive environment wherever you go.

9 TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR BODY POSTURE : GOOD POSTURE

Posture means the position in which someone holds their body when standing or sitting.

There are two types of posture

  • Dynamic posture is how you hold yourself when you are moving, walking, running, etc
  • Static posture is how you hold yourself when you are not moving.

Dr. Shimaa Essa defines a good poster is the attitude assumed by the body parts to maintain stability and balance to maintain minimum effort and least strain during supportive and non-supportive position

BENEFITS OF GOOD POSTURE :

  • Keeps your joints and bones in proper alignment
  • Prevents strain and fatigue
  • Improves mental health
  • Improves circulation
  • Decreases abnormal weight on your joints

DISADVANTAGES OF BAD POSTURE :

  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Curvature of spine
  • Back pain
  • Negative mood
  • Stiffness in back

To know more about the disadvantages of bad posture CLICK HERE

Now let us get into the tips that are beneficial to improve your posture:

(NOTE: I would appreciate if you check all the links after you have finished reading my blog entirely)

1. WEARING THE RIGHT FOOTWEAR

Well it is not a surprise that as much as those pretty heels can make you look like one of those VS models, it is scientifically proved to be equally or more harmful for your back.

When you wear heels, your entire body’s weight is placed on the ball of your foot and your heel is used only for balance.

Not wearing the right footwear can lead to bad posture which can further lead to chronic health problems.

Let just save those pretty heels for your best night. Until then wear the right footwear to college or work that makes you feel comfortable.

Use cushion slippers on a regular basis to avoid soreness in your feet.

If would like to purchase footwear cushions recommended by me, I have given some products below. Please have a look.

2. PRACTICE GOOD POSTURE WHILE STANDING

Follow these easy steps to practice a good posture while standing

  • Keep your shoulders back
  • Stand straight
  • Stretch little if you feel stiffness anywhere in the body
  • Use wall to correct your posture
  • Use posture corrector

Healthline has created a 30 day calendar on Every Woman’s Guide to Better Posture

3. PRACTICE A GOOD POSTURE WHILE SITTING

Practising good posture while you are sitting becomes very important if you have a sedentary lifestyle.

  • Sit straight
  • You can use a Lumbar Cushion
  • Don’t slouch
  • Stretch if you feel your body has become too stiff
  • Don’t sit in one position for too long

4. PRACTICE A GOOD POSTURE WHILE LYING DOWN

While sleeping we prefer sleeping in a comfortable position. Sleeping in a wrong position can lead to back pain, neck pain, etc.

Many times I have heard people saying that the pain/stiffness/soreness they are experiencing is because they slept wrong. Sometimes sleeping on a couch or uncomfortable pillow can cause discomfort to your body.

Coastal Orthopaedics made an amazing blog Practice a correct sleeping position. These are some easy steps you can add to your sleeping routine that can help you to maintain a good posture. Check this out after you have finished reading my blog.

5. KEEP A REMINDER

Now I know this may sound crazy but I figured out that keeping a track of this might be a very onerous job. Neverthless I believe that this technique will aid you to better your posture.

  • Go on your reminder app
  • Set a reminder for few weeks until you’ve developed a habit to stay without it.

It is so much easier this way.

6. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT

Both being overweight and underweight can lead to a bad posture. Not just bad posture but numerous other health problems.

Watch what you eat. Keep a track of your diet.

Scientifically speaking, having unhealthy posture can affect your physical as well as your mental health.

Keep working on your body everyday to keep it healthy. Not for pictures, not to impress others but for the goodness of your own sake.

Healthy isn’t a goal, it is a way of living.

7. DO NOT SLOUCH!

As much as it sounds comfy, DO NOT SLOUCH!

It seems difficult to keep this in mind because most of us have developed this habit to slouch during lectures, meetings, etc

Usually this happens when you are bored. I have noticed that somehow slouching is associated with losing interest and feeling dull.

Many of us has experienced this during our lectures or meetings. The more you sit straight, the more attention you can pay and the moment you slouch in split seconds you loose interest from that particular topic.

“Confident people do not slouch” – well I am not so sure about it, but if this works then I am cool with it.

“Good posture can be successfully acquired only when the entire mechanism of the body is under perfect control.”Joseph Pilates

8. SAY NO TO “TEXT NECK”

We live in a world of technology. I understand the importance of technology these days and there are people doing full time job on their mobile phone/laptop/tablets/computers.

While working on laptop or mobile, the head and neck are in flexion position which can lead to neck and shoulder pain (pain is experienced in occipital and cervical region).

Signs and symptoms of Text neck

  • Neck Pain
  • Occipital headache
  • Reduced mobility

I experienced a similar kind of pain few days back because of the excessive work that needed to be done on laptop.

I tried this NECK PAIN STRETCHES & EXERCISE BY AskDoctorJo and I am not kidding it was such a huge relief.

Thanks Dr. Jho ♡

9. EXERCISE

Exercise is a great way to improve your posture. Lucky for me Healthline has already made a great blog explaining everything about the importance of exercise to improve your posture.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE SELF-TALK

Consistent positive self-talk is unquestionably one of the greatest gifts to one’s subconscious mind.

– Edmond Mbiaka

Positive self talk is a beautiful way to achieve success quickly. When you realise that you have the power and resources to grow, your life becomes more amazing.

When you are out talking with a bunch of people you will notice that after your conversations is over, your brain repeats the conversation and you bring those thoughts home along with you.

When you speak your brain registers that and creates a similar kind of energy.

Let’s say, there are two types of energy

  1. Positive energy
  2. Negative energy

A lot of times we talk negative that creates a negative energy which is the reason why almost all the time we are unhappy.

Benefits of Positive self talk are

  • Improves self confidence
  • Develops positive mindset
  • Provides good mental health
  • Feeling of satisfaction
  • Overall good physical health (You can’t control what happens in your life but you can control your reaction to it. If you can’t control your reaction to the situation you end up being in a place that is very difficult to come out from. If you don’t know to handle yourself in a negative situation there are chances that the trauma of that particular situation can have a negative impact on physical level as well)
  • Feeling of gratitude

So today I’m going to give you 5 power tips on how to do a positive self talk.

1. CHANGE THE TONALITY OF YOUR VOICE

Our brain is constantly working. Using a positive tone while doing a self talk will help your brain to generate a positive energy that you require to change your perspective towards any negative situation.

How we express ourselves through words repeatedly has a psychological effect on our brain.

Here’s an example. When you are frustrated you say something like “Argh this is completely useless. I should’ve never tried. I will never be successful”

Did you notice something?

Not only you are demotivating yourself but also also you are criticising yourself. You are certainly not appreciating the efforts that you invested in your work and eventually you become your own enemy.

So I think you don’t need an outsider to put you down because that is what you are doing.

Motivate yourself by using positive tone and say something like:

  • “You can do it”
  • “You have the potential to do it”
  • “Do not give up”
  • “Believe In Yourself”
  • “I like me”
  • “I’m on the right track”
  • “Everything will be fine”
  • “It’s Okay – Be positive”

By doing this you are creating a positive energy. You are appreciating yourself, learning from your mistakes and you are growing

2. PRACTICE POSITIVE MINDSET

It takes time to develop a strong positive mindset. A positive mindset is very different from what people perceive. It takes time, efforts, dedication and consistency to create one.

MEDITATION. Best way to practise positive mindset is to meditate. Studies have shown that meditation help in achieving a strong positive mindset. The reason why I emphasise on meditation is because it has lot of benefits. It reduces stress, anxiety, depression and generates kindness. It is the best way for you to feel good about yourself.

Meditating is refreshing for your mind. You feel light and it opens up lot of positive doors in your life that help you to overcome every negative situation.

  • Get comfortable
  • Put on a soothing music
  • Meditate

I personally prefer listening to Tai Chi music for meditation.

If you ever feel that you are tired and not ready for the day that is the exact time to practise positive mindset by using positive self talk and meditation.

USE YOUR SENSE OF HUMOUR AS A STRESS COPING MECHANISM. Doing this can help you understand that it is okay to not take life so seriously.

WRITE A POSITIVE JOURNAL. Make a habit of writing a positive journal regularly. Write all the positive things your eyes see every day. So even if you go through an unpleasant situation, you will somehow manage to find positivity in that situation. This help in understanding the essence of life. In a way you are training yourself to find positivity in every situation that will help you attain positive attitude towards everything.

3. CUT THOSE NEGATIVE PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR LIFE.

Toxic people are those kind of people who

  • Manipulate
  • Control
  • Emotionally abuse other people
  • Always act like a victim
  • Doesn’t believe in keeping boundaries
  • Doesn’t respect you
  • Constantly lies

Toxic people can really affect your mind.

Distance yourself from things that are poisonous to your mental health. Put an end to a toxic friendship. Take a break from a toxic relationship. True friends don’t do things that hurt you. True love feels like a true love.

When you surround yourself with people who make you feel disconnected with yourself, you start looking down on yourself. You start suppressing yourself. You start doubting your decisions. They’re views about you start penetrating your mind and your mind replays those negative thoughts every time you make a decision. Not only they are halting your growth but also you might encounter low self esteem.

Get rid of people or habits that are harming your inner peace.

“You are who you are. Don’t be ashamed of yourself. At all. Surround yourself with people who cheer you on.”
― Jessica Park, Flat-Out Celeste

4. PRAISE YOURSELF

One of the best way to practice positive self talk is to praise yourself. Surround yourself with as much as positivity as you can. Use an enthusiastic tone while praising yourself. Compliment yourself

When you praise yourself not only it generates a positive energy in you but you also start to expand your positive vibe.

When you praise yourself you are developing self confidence. You feel good about yourself. You start to appreciate yourself. You accept yourself. Don’t buy or do something with an intention to satisfy or please others.

Do it for yourself !

Appreciate yourself and understand the essence of happiness to a deeper level.

If you acknowledge the beauty in you and around you, the negative vibes will fade away.

“Self appreciation is a sign of maturity, seeking appreciation is a sign of immaturity”
― Sivaprakash Sidhu

5. CONVERT A NEGATIVE SITUATION INTO A POSITIVE ONE.

I understand it is not always easy to be positive in every situation.

Like I said earlier being positive is a slow process that requires dedication, consistency, hard-work and a very strong positive mindset.

On one hand that sounds tough.

But on the other hand if you see there are numerous motivational speakers teaching you to be positive in a negative situation because they have a good experienced about it. They know that it is important for you to be positive in a negative situation.

If you ever face setbacks in your life, remember you are one step closer to success. If you let your fear to face a negative situation control you then it will become difficult for you to achieve success because fear holds you back from doing great things.

The only way to achieve success is to not fear the failure.

If you ever encounter a negative situation, along with positive tone also do the following things:

  • Read motivational quotes
  • Read Inspiring books
  • Watch Motivational videos
  • Exercise
  • Read biography of successful people and understand their strategy to overcome the hurdles in life
  • Connect with GOD
“The lotus comes from the murkiest water but grows into the purest thing.” – Nita Ambani

So well these were the 5 powerful tips for you to practice positive self talk. It will take time but if you are consistent in practising these 5 simple steps I am sure that slowly you will welcome a positive change in your life.
